A year full of costumes and conventions

The end of the year is closing in and nine costumes, few projects and four conventions later I can look back to 2011 surprised, astonished and bit puzzled too. I really enjoyed last year even if there were struggles and setbacks. One single thing I’m really pleased with is our character choices. It feels like during the past year we have found characters that we can pull it off well and balanced. We have also polished skills with props and construction techniques.

Our first huge cosplay project reached a milestone in February, when we got our Snowtrooper costumes ready for a photoshoot. Before Tampere Kuplii we constructed the backpacks and were ready to participate in our first cosplay competition as freshly recruited soldiers. At Tampere Kuplii we were selected to the group of ten candidates, who got through to the second stage of the competition, which was an open voting on a website of a local newspaper. In the final battle our troopers carried us to third place.

We continued with Star Wars theme with female characters. For our first Desucon we arrived as Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee and spend the weekend hanging around and enjoying the seats at the main concert hall. I think we have never sat as much at any convention before.

The next costumes to build were supposed to be Ivy and Yoshimitsu, but instead I found myself complying with Yoki's wish to construct “something new” for Kawacon. That something new was femme gijinka Decepticons; Princess Megs and Lady Star. While at the convention we got recruited for the cosplay competition and won, for our amazement. With the bot ladies we had our first real photoshoot with a real, live photographer!

The big project was still ahead. After WCS preliminaries back in 2010 I stated to Yoki that next year we are going to compete. And we did so with Ivy and Yoshimitsu from Soul Calibur III. And came second! That was the crown for our sixth year we have cosplayed together.

But the year wasn’t all about successful costumes and fun conventions. Starting from spring, around the time we started to print the fabrics for our Jedi Knights, I felt like something was wrong with me. My condition developed so that July and August passed by in a haze of pain and drugs. Even if some days crafting costumes or even getting out of bed was almost impossible, I think that working gave me something else to think about, than continually worrying and doubting on my sick leave. I could say that cosplay became my lifeline for a period of time.

Only two weeks before Tracon and WCS preliminaries I got diagnosed with a chronic illness. A week before Tracon I started my medication and without it I think that I couldn’t have been able to step on the stage back in September. Coming second in WCS preliminaries was a huge thing for us. For me just being able to participate was really important.

Photos of Ivy and Yoshimitsu: Emilia Lahtinen.

This year cosplay gave me little more that new techniques and garments to fill the closet. For a short time I thought that I might have to drop the hobby, but now that my health has improved I couldn't think more opposite! I'm really proud of what we have accomplished this year and wait eagerly for the next year and new challenges.

What I wish for next year next to straight seams and sharp scissors is health and opportunities to connect with other enthusiastic costumers. Happy New Year!

Zatannurday: Happy New Year!

Time to say goodbye to 2011 and hello to 2012!

So how about Zatanna and Cedric Poulat show us the way.

Looking Forward to 2012: Willow and Tara

I have been missing my Friday Willow and Tara posts.

I have been reading and re-reading a ton of my old supers games (and new ones) and I have been thinking that maybe I need to revive Generation HEX.  I think it would be a good time and frankly, I miss the girls.

Expect to see some supers related posts in 2012.

Looking Forward to 2012: Other Features

I'd love to get some more games and useful crunch out to you all.

Books I am working still are "Here There Be Dragons..." and a couple of books for Elf Lair Games.
I might have more material coming out from Eden, too soon to tell right now.

I am also working on a first for me, a Sci-Fi game that I hope is a twist on many sci-fi games.

Here's hoping I get some good writing in.

Looking Forward to 2012: White Dwarf

This week I am going to continue some posts of things I want to do in 2012.

I have a stack of White Dwarf magazines sitting here at home.  They cam in handy to stop the purge of many D&D related articles on Wikipedia a while back and I generally get a big kick out of them.  There is something so British about them to me.

So in 2012 I am going to try to do "White Dwarf Wednesdays".  I am going to go through issues #1 to #100 each Wednesday and pull out what is good.  Less of a review or a "Where I Read..." type post.  But we will see.

Looking Forward to 2012: Reviews

In 2011 I wanted to get 400 new reviews done and up at DriveThru RPG.
The trouble is that 400 products take a long time to do.  I did get about 200 in all said and told.

So this year I'd like to get some more reviews up.  I want to share what I like with you all and hope that you return the favor and tell me what you like, or don't like.  Sometimes this is the best way to learn of a new product.

Most of my reviews, the vast majority really, will be on DriveThruRPG / RPGNow.  Though I'll continue doing longer reviews for RPG Net and Amazon.

Looking Forward to 2012

This week I am going to be posting a series of posts on what my plans are for 2012.

2011 and 2010 were big years here at the Other Side and I want to keep that up.  So stayed tuned all week and post your thoughts!

You can expect to see more Zantannurdays and of course my take on what is going on in the OSR and other areas of the hobby.

Of course we have have some great movies coming up that go to the very heart of our hobby, "John Carter of Mars" (now just John Carter) and the first part of "The Hobbit" (not to mention the new Dark Knight movie too).

Here are my new year's resolutions for this blog and gaming in general:
1. Play more with my kids.
2. Try more new games.
3. Get more reviews done.
4. Get more of my works in progress done.

Interview with Hitomi @ EOY

I had the good chance to be one of the media representative at EOY a couple weeks back. Here is the interview segment we had with Hitomi.

Q: What inspired her to be a Maid?
She has a younger brother at home and so she takes care of her brother. She likes to do more for other people.

Q: What about all the singing and dancing?
As a maid, she thinks she cannot get through to the customer. That’s why she wants to get through to them by singing and dancing. Through the song, people will feel happier.

Q: So people say being a celebrity maid is like a celebrity cosplayer?
I’m actually only a Maid Idol

Q: What does she think about being a Maid idol then?
It make people more happy. That’s why she thinks its a very touching job (?)

Q: Will she ever be going into cosplay?
She has done a few but she definitely wants to do more of it.

Q: Any characters that she likes very much?
She likes Hatsune Miku

Q: You’ve played “Pimp Butler” the card game. how do you feel about it?
Oh yes, it’s very fun. She’s very sad she lost and wants to play again.

Q: Since you will be going back to Japan, did they give you a pack to play?
Yes they have!

Q: Will you be playing it in Japan?
Yes definitely, she will be playing at home.

Q: Does she have any tips on how she maintains her stamina when she sings and dance? How does she train herself?
She does dance lessons and she’s part of this Team Junjou duo.

Q: How does she train her stamina?
Oh, keep on practising haha

Q: Does she have any tips or tricks for aspiring Maids?
Her tip is, to feel as a maid you should aspire to make other people happy.

Q: Does she have Maid Idol?
No..

Q: How does she feel, to be invited as a guest of honour to a Cosplay Event, as a maid?
This invitation was actually extended from 6 months back and she’s very excited about it.
She’s very happy and excited to be invited

Q: So does she feel it’s weird for a Cosplay Event t be inviting her?
According to her, besides Singapore, she has also been invited to a multitudes of event abroad.

Merry Hexmas!

Great Christmas day!

My boys got me the Dresden Files RPG!  Yeah!
My wife picked up "Hammer Glamour" for me.
This was a great gift.  While the rest of my friends growing up were lusting after women with names like Farrah and Cheryl, my first serious lusts were Ingrid Pitt, Pippa Steele, Caroline Munro, and Madeline Smith.

Hope your holiday was equally as good.

COSPLAY: The Series , Interview with Ayu & Bando

In line with the release of COSPLAY: The Series Season 2, The Cosplay Chronicles and CTS will be bringing you guys a set of exclusive interview with the cast from CTS2.

In this interview, I’ve had the good chance to talk to the actress of Ayu and Bando. Click here to read the interview I did with Agnesya, Annisa and Anya .

AUSI SEKARISMI as BANDO

TCC: How did you get the role and what was your first reaction/thought?

AI: I got offered to play this role by Kazu, and she told me the part I had to play was just like me! So my first reaction was, “Wait, am I really like that?” *laughs*

AS: I joined casting, and it so happens that the role I had to play sort of fits me, only in a much more hyperbolic way! I still like jumping around and laugh a lot, so the challenge was to tune those down and get into a very gloomy character.

TCC: Did you have to sacrifice anything (school, homework, club activities, work, partners, family, etc) to take part in this series?

AI: Not really! Just some simple schedule rearrangements was necessary, but that was it.

AS: Yup! First, obviously I don’t get to go out much, because the series was pretty much shot at my places. Regarding assignments from my studying, it definitely needs a lot of time management but it had to be done!

TCC: How was the whole filming process like? Describe with details :D!

AI: I didn’t really understand what was going on! It was just so full of meticulous details and considerations about angles and sounds and everything!

BR: *laughs* Especially because we were working with no equipment whatsoever!

AS: I’d never actually met the director or any of the crews when we started, we just talked online. I was even still not familiar with some of the cosplayers in the project! But we got closer as we progress. As Associate Producer and the person responsible for the set, it was also my job to make sure everyone gets fed!

The process was interesting because we simply make use of whatever was available. It was tiring because we had to run all over the place to rearrange all the properties so that things make sense, but all of that was worth it seeing the end results and knowledge we all gained.

TCC: Have you ever acted before? How was it like to be an actor/actress?

AI: Only in cabarets, does that count? *laughs* It’s not easy of course, and sometimes it’s especially hard in front of the camera!

AS: Yes, at my school’s theater club. I always performed in every school event. But my role is usually that of either the loud narcissistic female or the one who gets bullied all the time, so this one was very different.

Acting in front of the camera is also very different than on stage. Theater performances usually require hours of intense training, while in our process it was on set improvisation that mattered, how you acted right then and there, and you just repeat the scene until you get it right. It was hard! *laughs* It’s a good thing I can memorize the script!

TCC: How was it like working with Bonni Rambatan/ Producer and the entire crew?

AI: It was fun!!! I was really excited about it, because Bonni had a great story!! I also love the fact that he used my songs as a couple of the soundtracks! *laughs* I loved the entire crew, too, they were very helpful!

BR: Ayu here is the lead singer of Celestial Dreams Project and a couple of other popular bands in Bandung. We’re all thrilled to have her songs in the series!

AS: It was exciting!! Each and everyone jokes around all the time, but when we start working, they got all serious and professional. They were also very patient to get the perfect shot, even if we had to do the scene over and over again! We’re not professional actors, so I guess that is bound to happen.

TCC: Okay, something totally different. What’s your favourite Ice cream and why?

AI: Chocolate! I love chocolate, it’s a part of my life... *laughs*

AS: I like chocolate, but on a hot day I prefer those fresh, acid-y ones, ones with bright colours, simply because they’re more mouth watering!

TCC: Which Anime/Manga/Game character would you date and why?

AI: I’ve never really thought about it... But I do love Inuyasha.

AS: Hmm... I’m not sure... I think I was once in a very big crush with Inuyasha, because he’s cute, handsome, strong, childish, and a shundere! *laughs*

TCC: How do you feel about girls like Ayu in Real Life? Ayu didn’t have much scenes in Season 1, would she be making more appearances in Season 2?

AI: I think she’s amazing because she isn’t shy about using her assets to help her friends! *laughs* I don’t want to judge her flirtatious side, but I do find the character interesting. I do hope to get more appearances in Season 2! *laughs*

TCC: She seems quite the shady character doesn’t she? Do you think you would be able to befriend someone like her in real life? I mean, getting connected with her frequency is difficulty by itself.

AS: Yeah... I can’t really tell since I’ve never met anyone quite like her in real life. But I think I’ll be cool with her, because I’m not picky when it comes to friends, as long as they don’t bother me. Also, we both like psycho stuff anyway, like playing around with paper cutters! Maybe we can go out to see psycho movies together! *laughs*

BR: Fadli and I never stop smiling at how extremely well (and scary) Chizu imitates Bando! *laughs* I’m not sure what I was going to get when I opened casting for the “guro girl,” but then I saw Chizu, and she was perfect! I think naturally Chizu is already connected with Bando’s frequency! *laughs*

TCC: Tell us something about yourself that is totally different from your character!

AI: I don’t like to flirt with old men!! *laughs*

AS: I like bright colours, although I also like black. Sometimes I really like to be feminine, with a dress, high heels and makeup. I like joking and simply being noisy with friends, and I’m actually pretty scared of ghosts and zombies!

TCC: How far do you think Cosplay: The Series would go?

AI: I think it’s already gone pretty far, so I can only hope the best for the series... It’s really great.

AS: We will keep going far and hopefully even get adapted into larger projects in the industry!

TCC: Does the series have any affect on your life?

AI: No, I try to keep my personal life separate.

AS: Well, I get more busy and I gained a lot of new friends! *laughs*

TCC: What kind of future do you foresee for the hobby ‘Cosplay’?

AI: Hmm, I think almost every country now has a cosplay community, right? I think people are getting more and more creative, and I love seeing them and seeing the growth and development.

AS: Cosplay will be one of the most desired hobbies because it can really push your creativity forward, and also because it can bring us closer to those with a similar passion, wherever they may be in the world. People will also understand more about cosplay, and the reason we do it.

Return of the Dragonslayers

I got home early from work today and my boys wanted to play some D&D.  Like a good Daddy I agreed.

We continued going through the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, the Lesser Caverns, and they got to the stairs to the Greater Caverns.  I pulled out my 3.0 version of the Book of Vile Darkness to up the "demonic" content a bit.  I figure that caverns are a stopper for the forces of the Abyss, so the boys are bound to run into the worst types of demonic scum.

The original adventure had the Greater Caverns were protected by a gorgimera.  Today it was the largest abyssal chimera ever seen (well by them).

It was a great time today.  Looking forward to the Greater Caverns and the search for Iggwilv's greatest treasure.

What are you getting this year?

To all the good little boys and girls (and to the bad ones too!) what are you getting for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Solstice/Yule/Festivus this year?

I am hoping for The Dresden Files RPG in print and maybe some fudge dice to go with it.
I'd also like one of then Kim Harrison books.
But mostly I am hoping for some time to do some gaming with my kids.  That would be best of all.

What are you all hoping for?

Shakugan No Shana Christmas Outfit (Photo shoot)

Shana (14)I can hardly believe a year has gone by that fast! Before I knew it, Christmas is just a few days away! I still have a truckload of stuffs to do which I’m falling desperately behind.

Anyway, before I miss the season again, I just want to share some of my recent photoshoot photos with you guys. Let’s hope no puke was induced with my act-cuteness ;D

So last weekend, my super awesome photographers and I brave the enthusiastic crowd and rain to shoot this set of pictures in Orchard Road itself! Presenting Shana from Shakugan no Shana, Season 2’s final episode outfit! Yes, the outfit she wore to confess to Yuuji and to fight the final boss Open-mouthed smile And yes, I’m that much of a Shana fangirl!

Photographers:

:iconsour-cheese: Sour Cheese            :iconheavens-leaf: Geno

It was a mad mad rush getting the costume together and it has got to be one of my ghetto-est costume ever! The photoshoot was arranged in around 1 week + and I only decided on which costume to wear like, 5 days before it!

Shana (1)

Shana (2)

SONY DSCShana (3)

Finding the right fabric at the right price was what took up most of my time! I went to Chinatown and Toa Payoh but couldn’t find anything suitable. In the end, in view of the nearing deadline, I bit my lips and bought expensive Poplin (pretty much like Cotton) from Spotlight instead.

I hope you find the use of poplin unnoticeable in the pictures because I deliberately took the trouble of making a felt lining inside to give the coat stiffness and volume befitting of a winter coat xD

Shana (5)Shana (6)Shana (8)Shana (16)

Pretending to be cold in a tropical country is hilariously lame. But ah well, you guys know me … XD

Shana (7)

Waiting for Yuuji to choose her…

Shana (9)

I also didn’t have enough fur so I had to go out and buy extra fur just before the photoshoot. So yes, as you would have guessed, that part of the fur was safety pinned and double sided taped on. So ghetto *hides*.

Shana (11)

Shana (21)

The weather was so unpredictable that day. It would be clear for a while and then pour so heavily the next moment. Like what Sour-cheese said, it’s almost as if Mother Nature was having urine incontinence xD Also as an added misfortune, my boots decided to give way before the shoot start so I had to secure it with guess what? Scotch tape. I am so awesome LOL! *gets bashed*

Shana (12)Shana (29)Shana (28)

Still waiting…

Shana (25)Shana (26)Shana (27)Shana (31)Shana (33)

why is Yuuji not here yet =( ?

SONY DSCSONY DSCSONY DSCSONY DSC

Sorry for the lack of text in this entry. I honestly don’t know what to say and I’m really sleepy now so please pardon me.

You’d notice an incredible amount of photos compared to my other photoshoot entries, that’s because of the awesome photographers that made it possible. Good photo won’t need no photoshop right Open-mouthed smile?  And ironically, the breaking down of my PC that has forced me to not have any means to photoshop the pictures hahah. So yes, none of the photos here have been photoshopped by yours truly.

I’m not exactly good at doing MOE but nevertheless, I hope you guys enjoyed the photos and remember to leave me a comment!

First Day of Winter, celebrate with Ice

Since today is the first day of Winter I'd thought I'd celebrate with something for my oldest son. Here is one of his favorite super-heroes, Ice.

I have always liked Ice.  Like Tara I felt she was totally shafted; killed just make a point that was soon forgotten.  I am glad she is back in the comics now.

Updated pages

I am going to be making some mostly cosmetic changes to the old Other Side here for the new year.
Not changing scope or posts or anything like that.

I am though working on how information is organized and how things look.

So yesterday I started with the Pages.  Those are the links above, just under the banner.

I added a new Mystoerth page which details my *D&D campaign world. There are a lot of internal links to material I have written here and links to outside sources that I also like to use.  If you know of a blog or website that should be linked here, let me know.

I combined the "About Me" and "My Books" page into one About Me page.

My Links Page is still the same, I might add the awards I have gotten though since those are to be linked back to other blogs.

I have added a few new builds to my Willow & Tara page and my Characters page.

Ghosts of Albion still gets it's own page.  As does my OGL declaration.

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 16 review)

Uploaded by cosplaytheseries on Dec 7, 2011

With the power of the Legendary Treasure at their disposal, our heroes have little trouble defeating the numerous demon armies sent by The Alliance of Evil. But the Alliance have made a backup plan, and unleashes their secret weapon just as the group is already at their weakest...

This has got to be the cutest episode by far. Not only have the production team managed to come up with something that fits the Cosplay theme, it has also managed to incorporate light hearted humour into an otherwise stern context. The abundant reference to Geek/Otaku culture also brings a smile on fellow Otakus (*coughmecough*) .

As always, the graphics and post production displays a high standard of quality deliverance. I especially love the camera angles employed in this episode as it brings the viewers right into the scene.

I’d have to admit the death scene took me back by surprise . I wasn’t quite expecting life and death issue to pop up when one talks about a teeny hobby such as ‘Cosplay’. The idea of anyone losing themselves in pursue of another identity (Cosplay) sends a shiver down my spine. Good kids out there, remember this is just a show! We don’t kill people when we cosplay hokays >D?

Am I the only scaredy cat here? Share with me your comments about this episode!

I can’t believe I actually forgot about sharing exclusive Behind-The-Scene pictures with you guys! Check them out below!

December 2012 feels like a long way away.

Selasa, 20 Desember 2011

I asked, you repsonded!

Earlier today I asked a simple question. "Using only Mundane means how can you kill a ghost?" here are the responses I got!

Blogger Trey said...
Destroying the item/location it's tethered to?
December 20, 2011 9:58 AM

Great post. I guess I was thinking more of attack the ghost itself. But that is a tried and true way to do it.

Blogger farawayeyes said...
A ghost is already dead. You can't necessarily kill them. Best to just send them on.
December 20, 2011 10:03 AM

I think I was thinking more of the attacking kind of Ghost.  So yours and Trey's would be to figure out why it is here and use that.

Blogger Simon Forster said...
Reciting the ghost's history, up to its death, reminding it that it has lived and died, thus sending it to whatever afterlife awaits it.
December 20, 2011 10:18 AM

Neat idea.  Something that would be perfect for an Occult Poet in Ghosts of Albion to do!

Blogger The Happy Whisk said...
I'm going to agree with Trey. Destroying them by removing whatever is holding them here.

Then maybe they can move on.

I've heard salt before though, but never tried it so I can't tell you if it really works.
December 20, 2011 10:18 AM

Salt has a long standing connection to the supernatural.  It is also simple to get and use.  I am sure there is a connection there.

OpenID seaofstarsrpg said...
If ghosts are ectoplasm and ectoplasm has a physical existence, fire.

If the ghost believes, an exorcism should send it away.
December 20, 2011 10:23 AM

Kill it with fire! Always a good choice.

OpenID keithboyle said...
Depends on the type of ghost being killed... er, dispensed with, I guess. Working from a ghosts-as-electromagnetic-fields perspective:

Death echoes could be dispersed by setting up a counter-noise generator - like the ones in noise-cancelling headphones, but on a room- or house-sized scale. Remember those multiroom speakers that transmitted sound through the house wiring? this would be the lo-fi DIY way of implementing this.

Intelligent/Interactive ghosts would be best handled through negotiation. The trick would be to get them to stay still long enough to have a meaningful chat. So I'm thinking EM Pump combined with Carnacki's electric pantacle with Spirit Box as vocal translator. Then have the conversation - what you want, what they want, how to find agreement, that sort of thing...

Poltergeists as rogue PK in children/teens also fits this model, so ground them via conductive jewelry, cutting their hair shorter, and good old patience as they grow out of this phase should work as well.

You said no supernatural, so I'm going to call the "demonic hauntings" of current TV ghost hunting fashion "anomalous idiopathic EM fields" and recommend Faraday cages around the sensitive spots. It doesn't destroy it, but it does contain it...
December 20, 2011 10:26 AM

Well thought out. So a Spirit Zapper or Spirit Trap in a way.

OpenID keithboyle said...
The lore on salt goes something like this: it's the only rock that's pure enough that we can eat. That purity is incompatible with the "uncleanness" of the spirits, Thus, ghosts can't cross it. Getting shot with it would just be forcing them to not cross themselves and causes dispersal.

Not a huge fan of calling that sort of thinking"mundane only," but salt's about as mundane as you can get.

The Kripke Trinity - salt, iron, burn the bones - works really well as weapons for adventure stories like SPN, though their meaning and uses in traditional ghost stories is quite different...
December 20, 2011 10:36 AM

Cool. I like this approach.  I always figured that it was something that you can bring into your home, salt is something that is like life.

Blogger Woodclaw said...
Given the "no supernatural" rule I think that the main methods are already covered by the previous posts.
Either destroying the links of the ghost to the mundane world (if possible) or destroy its mortal remains might work.
The whole reminds him/her that he/she is already dead is tricky because I'm not sure a ghost is willing to listen.
Keithboyle pretty much covered the scientific/technobabble angle.

Another option is running water. According to the Celtic tradition large bodies of water (especially rivers and lakes) are doors into the afterlife, for this reason a ghost can't cross running water. If someone can force a ghost close enough to a river or a stream the proximity might do the trick.
December 20, 2011 11:12 AM

So if I am facing a ghost, then a fire hose.  I like it!

OpenID tarotgames said...
@Technobabble: EM Pumps and Spirit Boxes are considered legitimate tools for ghost hunters/paranormal investigators, in the same way EVP is. Granted, it's a pretty biased piece of reasoning to go from unexplained phenomenon to explainable and exploitable technology, but truly critical thinking isn't normally a well-used tool in a ghost hunter's bag. It's akin to forgetting what the U in UFO stands for and saying that the odd lights in the sky are aliens here to rule the world...

I threw out the Carnacki reference because, frankly, it's Tim who's asking the question. The real-life analog to what Hodgson described is a Faraday cage - aka the shielding & grounding frame inside the computer that you're using to read these words.

Mongo avoids the [tech] like the plague: even if the terms aren't that familiar, they're not entirely meaningless or made-up if I can help it...
December 20, 2011 12:16 PM

I think I was going with "things I have laying around the house or garage".  Granted that also rules out fire and the fire hose.  I have a garden hose though and a sprinkler that looks like a turtle for my lawn.  I am so screwed.

Blogger JWRouseIII said...
Blow it apart with a leaf blower.
December 20, 2011 12:40 PM

That's only good for guys dress in sheets going "boooooo". ;)

Blogger Laura said...
Using a lot of moxy and deduction, I'd reveal that it's only Old Man Grimley, the owner of the abandoned amusement park, out to scare off the current owners so he can collect his money. He'll call me a meddling kid, but a good day's work is worth it.
December 20, 2011 1:06 PM
Haha!! Scooby Doo for the win!

Blogger Jensan said...
Treat it like a hiccup: scare it away!
December 20, 2011 2:20 PM
Be scarier than the Ghosts.  Of course!  The Doctor Who Offensive.
