Tracon, trolls and toddlers

Maybe it’s about time to write something about last weekend, which we successfully spent at Tracon with a party of seven. Seven! We overcame all obstacles and were victorious!

Tracon is an annual convention held traditionally at Tampere. This year’s convention was the seventh of its kind and the third one held at Tampere Hall, conference and concert hall near the center of the city. So alongside shops and grocery stores, accommodation is near. We literally had to take only few steps and we were at the convention area. We liked it, with the troll feet especially. Tracon’s program covers pretty much everything from role-playing games to anime and manga, with huge amount of cosplay from various sources. The quests of honor this year were Sandy Petersen (Cthulhu!) and Yasuhiro Nakura(Moomin!). For us, Tracon 7 was our fifth Tracon on a row, if I remember correctly.

This Tracon was bit different compared to the previous ones. We didn’t cosplay from the same series with Yoki, we had three generations attending to the convention; including me, Yoki, Thalla, his wife and two children and the Mom/Grandmom and I acted as a judge for the costume competition on Saturday. Also, Yoki participated on a demonstration for original costume designs on Sunday, for which I give two thumbs up! I hope that this kind of show will continue as a part of the cosplay program, so that those creative people, who give a form to their imagination by constructing a costume, usually sparing no effort, can have some well earned stage time. I don’t know if alternative or unofficial forms of characters could be integrated to this class somehow. Or would there be too many participants… Pre-selection maybe?

Over all the whole convention was a great experience. Loads of cosplay, great competitions and polite people, which really was nice since we had younglings with us. I have to admit that I was bit worried that a convention might be overwhelming with pram and lively two year old, but I was so wrong! Our two year old was so exited from all the life-sized stuffed toys that she wanted to hug each and every one. So big thank you to all the furries around! I bet you will not be forgotten.

Since I started to thank people, next big thank you goes to Iris, the person charge of the Tracon’s cosplay competitions and competitors and judges and… well, cosplay-everything. Thank you! For a first timer, the judging was a positive and a memorable experience. Also I could not have better mates to judge with. I, Lilian and Kizzy had weirdly enough really similar perspective to cosplay and I hope that we made the judging situation pleasant to the contestants, which was one of our goals. And if anyone wishes feedback from their costumes, just sent me e-mail on our address and I will reply from my personal account.

Part of the gratitude goes to the participants and everyone at the cosplay backstage. The competitions held at Tracon from the costume and show competition to the World Cosplay Summit preliminaries have been praised a lot, but not for nothing. Congratulations for all the ranked cosplayers!

I almost forgot our costumes! On Saturday we were troll siblings from World of Warcraft with Thalla. 

Yoki wore a costume from her original story, portraying Sio Imano both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday I strolled as Saya Otonashi from Blood+.

On Saturday, the kids were introduced to the world of cosplay in form of cute animal over-alls. I don’t know what kind of presents can be expected from the costume crazy auntie. Sadly, I don’t have a good photo of us all in costumes. We were standing in a rather dark corridor when we had the opportunity for group photos.

I’ll write a post about our troll costumes in more detail later on and spam some photos from the costumes. Also Yoki promised to write about her adventures in the field of costume construction.

Introducing Na’Gath and plans for Tracon vol. 251

It happened that I went blue today and asked Yoki to take some pictures of my latest cosplay. Meet Na’Gath, a carefree shaman based on World of Warcraft female troll. The garments are actual item designs in the game… I might have spiced them up a bit.

Based on the two hours I wore the costume, I say that this cosplay is rather comfortable, possibly because I chose a bodysuit over bodypaint. For the face and neck, which are the parts I had to paint, I used water soluble products from Grimas. I didn’t fix the paint and I could have concentrated more with the make-up, but in all it turned out quite well.

 

It doesn’t show up too well in the pictures, but I’m wearing a pair the blue fake eyelashes I accidentally found while looking for some bling to put on the pointy ears.

It’s possible that my costume will be the only one from the three we’ve been making that will debut at Tracon. It happened that first we had to drop the show competition because of unexpected setbacks and last week more followed. One of our trolls and three other party members might have to skip the occasion, but it’s quite alright. If we won’t make it to Tracon this year as a group, we will book another convention for the trolls next year. Thank goodness, there are so many conventions in Finland nowadays. 

But I and Yoki will be strolling at Tracon in few weeks for sure. Yoki will be portraying her original character design and possibly dig an older outfit from our costume crowded closet. For the first time we will swap costumes, as I have been thinking of wearing Saya Otonashi from Blood+, which Yoki wore at last Desucon. For the other day, my choice of costume is probably Na’Gath. Altough, based on the expession, Kuura seemed not to appreciate the troll in me.

Lumiere and Cogsworth at Frostbite

In all we had a nice and refreshing convention last weekend. Desucon Frostbite lived up to the expectations we had formed from last year’s Desucon. But there was one difference and that was obviously the weather. We didn’t suffer from any of the over-heating problems we had with Luminara and Barriss, even if we strolled whole Saturday in Snowtrooper gear. For Sunday we changed to our new costumes. WCS preliminaries hangover and happiness

"Too hasty!"

What a weekend! Two months of hard work really paid off when we were able to take home second place in World cosplay Summit Finnish preliminaries. Congratulations and all the best to the winning couple, Rimppu and Majo! It was great to compete with you and all the other competitors. The backstage was a nice change to get to a chatting distance from people who I’ve only seen on the internet and admired their drive for cosplay. And huge thanks to the judges! The feedback almost got me in tears (you wouldn’t know about Yoki, would you?) and the critics both from the costumes and the performance was truly valuable.

Not only the past few months but the last year has been a crazy costume journey. I started the year by finishing the Snowtroopers with Yoki, and then we were bound by fabric printing for Luminara and Barriss. I finished the costumes a day before Desucon just to start a new project with Femme Megatron and Starscream for Kawacon. The date for WCS Finnish preliminaries were announced after Desucon, so naturally when were done with the lady bots it was time to start the competition costumes, which were Isabella “Ivy” Valentine and Yoshimitsu from Soul Calibur III. Somewhere between I also took few commissions. Needless to say, the atmosphere right now is pretty exhausted.


I try to spend the rest of the year without any costume project… if I can. I’ve sworn few times that I will not work with costumes for some time, but found myself two weeks after the promise crafting something new. Maybe this time I won’t get the urge, because we’ve got some updating to do here on our blog. There is pile of posts waiting to be written from making of the costumes to the whole competition experience. The drive back home from Tracon VI I tried to figure out what would be the most convenient way to sort the different phases and pieces of the costumes. Would it be better to divide the project according to items or techniques?

Now I’m going to go and eat loads of chocolate. We declined treats before Tracon to keep in shape, so now I have some catching up to do! Later today I might gather together the photos our supporter aka mom took from us. Until then, chocolate!

Finally, a report from Tampere Kuplii and our first competition

We have been cosplaying as a pair for five years now and just recently we participated in a competition at Tampere Kuplii comic festivals. The cosplay competition was our main focus, so my report will mostly circle around that. There were two lectures we would've liked to see, but the other clashed with competitors photography session and the competition itself and the other was on the next day when we had to claim our car and leave. So we just hung around, which actually was really fun. We got to meet other cosplayers, talk about costuming and share thoughts. We actually met two other Star Wars cosplayers by chance! Both of them where members of 501st and the Rebel Legion.

We arrived to Tampere on Friday and checked in to our hotel. It was close to the convention centre, just few hundred meters away. We warned the clerks that we are not moving in, even if we would soon carry few cardboard boxes inside. We also mentioned that we would attend to the comic festivals and thus look bit different next day. I think it's polite to inform the staff if you are going to stroll in the hotel in costumes. Actually the hotel was really costume friendly, minus the leaking steam iron which peed on my shirt. The child quests were thriller every time they saw us and Yoki even got her picture taken with bride-to-be.

As expected, we still had some things to do before Saturday. Tired from four hours drive, stomach full of Chinese I glued the last details on our packs lying on the bed as Yoki went through next days plan. We also "rehearsed" our short skit on the hotel room without costumes or props. The " ", because it was more like a walk through than an actual rehearsal. Most of the time we just argued where we would enter the stage. Too tired and exited we trusted to the saying that bad dress rehearsal (without the dresses) would guarantee that the show itself would go well.

The next morning we got the costumes on including light make-up and assembling in hour and a half. While it was our first wear with the full costume, it was also the first test run for the backpacks. We had finished the fastenings on Thursday evening. They worked, but for next wear they need little tweaking. Then we were off to the photographing. The second take gave a sneak peak from our performance to other competitors. As usual, we went with humor.

Slight excitement was in the air as we waited for the competition to start. We had a chance to check the stage before hand. We also informed the host that we would not speak, because we didn’t have voice amps. We did speak while at the convention, but wanted to keep the illusion of radio audio while at stage. Then we waited. First the audience was let in, and then there were some problems with the mikes. After everything worked the host went through the competition format. The competition was in two phases. After all the competitors had been on the stage the judges would choose ten finalists to be part of an open voting on local newspaper. The competition itself was catwalk typed, but it was allowable to do a short skit.

About our skit… The part we had planned went really well and I think the audience also got the idea behind it. But the second half of our stage time was probably more entertaining in all it’s unluckyness. Like I said before, our backpack fastenings worked great. I can’t say same about our armor fastenings. It just happened that the gluing on Yoki’s crotch piece failed at the crucial moment!

For a moment I froze totally thinking how we could possibly save the situation. Gladly Yoki saved the day! She glanced down, pulled her hands to cover herself and finally pulled the flag she was carrying in front of her. The audience laughed, I was able to breathe again and Yoki earned applauses. The host also stumbled in her words and finally just drove us off from the stage. We have some video footage from the event. Yoki will probably include it on her next transmission.

The rest of the competition went in a blur. I remember I tried to fix the crotch fastening while in the audience. After everybody had had their moment in the flashlights big group shot was taken. While the judges deliberated who would be the ten finalists the audience enjoyed trailers from upcoming movies. Conveniently the competition was held in a movie theater.

When the results were announced our costumes were called first. I remember I took the flag and tumbled down to stage and Yoki somehow managed to follow me trying to keep her armor together. We both were so exited and confused that we didn’t hear what the judges said about our costumes.

And then after group shot of the finalists, it was over. While we were leaving the area one of the judges stopped us and asked was it part of the show that the crotch piece fell. We laughed and told that is was just an accident. Thank goodness for helmets! I bet that there wouldn’t be any doubt about it being an accident if the audience had seen my expression the moment I saw the armor piece lying on the floor!

The winner of the competition was group of three from movie Despicable Me. We landed the third place after Black Rock Shooter. Thank you if you voted for us! And big thanks also to those who stopped us and gave positive comments about our costumes! Now the pain feels worth it.

Quick costume overview from Desucon

I'm going to write more about our Desucon experience later. Currently I'm possessed by crazy cosplay frenzy for two reasons. Last Saturday the preliminary date for World Cosplay Summit was released and I somehow found myself promising Yoki that we will quickly piece together new costumes for Kawacon. It was weird to dig up patterning paper and references almost immediatelly after un-packing freshly debuted costumes!

Our Jedis were probably the most comfortable costumes we have worn, but still they got some minus sides. The capes were hot as hell! Because the weather changed from cloydy and rainy to sunny, we strolled in civil clothes on Sunday. We desided that Luminara and Barriss will be counted as spring/fall costumes from here on.

Next to hotness one minor problem was that our hems got stepped on them few times. Next to being comfy the costumes were easy to wear. Meaning that we didn't need worry about fastenings failing. They were thought through and well secured. Well, except the lightsaber hilt D-rings, which both came off within the first hour.

In some previous post I already mentioned that there is still some work ahead with Luminara's costume. I need to darken the cape fabric, becase it's way too brown. Before Desucon I just didn't have time to concentrate on dyeing it. I'm also going to weather the cloth and bracers. And I need to come up with better solution for the D-rings. Yoki's costume could actually be regarded as ready. I might adjust the cape a bit, but next to that I can't think of anything else.

Convention season 2011

It might be bit early to start rambling about this years conventions; first one is months away and we don’t know our other plans for summertime. But I got so exited by a certain envelope, which arrived in the mail!

Desucon is not the first con we are going to attend, but certainly it’s the most anticipated one. Even if it have been held twice before, we've never got ourselves transported to Lahti(-city). Now we have accommodation and transportation on the site assured, which is good if we even consider taking Whiteys there. I’m already having nightmares of how we travel with the costumes, yet try to cope with wearing and navigating in them when we are half-blind and numbed by plastic. Good that we have experience by then! We are going to wear the costumes publicly first time in the beginning of April.

The first happening is Tampere Kuplii, annual comic festival held 6-10.4. We chose Snowtroopers, because they fit the theme rather well and we might not fry in them at that time of the year. We are little hesitant though. We have our doubts for equation: city environment, spring and white costumes. Of course we will weather the costumes out at some point, but I would like to do it confined and with a precise plan.

The next event for us might be Bakacon at Pieksämäki. We are not yet totally sure about attending it, but “small town convention” feels just so damn appealing. Other duo we are going to do this year and have actually started is Jedi master Luminara Unduli and her padawan Barriss Offee. These two are strong candidates for Baka. Even with Luminara’s head piece the costumes are rather easy to travel with. But then again it might still be possible to wear Snowies in May as far as weather goes, so we might not introduce Luminara and Barriss before Desucon.

Desucon starts the series of summer conventions. We have thought about Kawacon in the beginning of July and Ropecon for old time sake in the end of the month. It really seems that we are compensating for the last con-dry years. In 2010 we attended one and in 2009 the magical number was two.

We can be counted as cosplayers who enjoy wearing old costumes, so costume-wise everything should be in control. We have Joxter and Muddler who we have worn only once. Yoki would like to wear Snufkin again, now that she has let her hair grow. I could join in with a cosplay of a rather similar character type. The costume is still unfinished, but I think I might be able to pull it together quickly. Or I could take Samara out for a walk and for her first real con. Yoki also has promised that she could consider Kirika Yuumura to go with Mireille. They would effortless solution for secondary costumes. We also have seriously thought about reintroducing Sasori and Deidara, but not only as basic ones… Ho-ho… About this I might write more in the coming months.

With new acquaintances Baka-, Kawa- and Desucon we'll meet our old friend in September. Tracon VI is held at Tampere in 3-4.9 and... there is little I can tell next to that. Our plans for Tracon are still quite open. We can't really choose the costumes before we know where the World Cosplay Summit preliminaries are being held. Costume selections for end of the season is determined by that.

In any case, we are thrilled! I think we have nice set of costumes to display both in conventions and on videos. Only things left is to make the costumes and wait for summer. Looking at the thermometer reminds me that it's still some way to go.

Convention report: Heat at Tracon V

We left from our hometown at ten on Friday morning, a day before the convention. Karan drove the first half of the almost four hour journey and I had the honor to freak out at Tampere's traffic, which for us small town girls was little crazy. The convention site was gladly easy to find. It just took one turn to left from the main road. Our hotel was just beside Tampere-talo. The first casualty of the journey occurred, when we drove down a ramp to the hotel's parking hall. It was a small scratch in the side of the car, caused by really narrow passage.

We booked in and found our room cool, while outside it was 30 Celsius. We had left some of Karan's props in the car, so she and Yoki thought they would go and get them while I would un-pack our costumes. But the car keys were missing. We were like... okay, when did this happen? In ten minutes time? Karan started to turn over her belonging. While she was going a second round I ran down to the desk, because for me it sounded like the most obvious place where they could be. And tadah! There they were. Happy ending for the second trial.

Well, that’s all about our arrival at Tampere. The next day started with wake-up call at seven, breakfast at half eight and preparations and make-up. We were ready approximately at ten. We thought that we would be able to see the opening ceremony, but didn't quite make it. It didn't bother us much, the first program we had planned to see started at eleven and it was a cosplay dance show.

MyuPro is a cosplay dance crew and new acquaintance for me. Of course I have seen videos from other countries, where cospay performances including dance and “musical” elements are a lot head of ours, but somehow I have missed groups doing the previous here in Finland. At Tracon MyuPro's show was themed Bleach. The name of the performance was “Valkaisuainetta”. In English I think it would be Bleacher. The show itself was build from individual pieces or performances with music from series openings to tracks from the rock musical. At this particular show they didn’t have special lights, because the circumstances didn’t allow the use of them. I changed few words with the group and they felt bit sorry for it even if the show worked without them. I have been acting in amateur theater for almost ten years, so I agree with them. The lights quickly change moods and can lead the eyes of the viewers to desirable direction. As a plus the shifts from one scene to other were thought trought. There was always something happening on the side of the stage, even if sometimes the meanings missed me. Did Rukia have a crush on someone or did she just want to dance with the guys, when she crawled to get to them? Never the less, I thought it was well played from Rukia and Yoruichi.

The construction of the show was good. In some points there were too many repeats of a series of movements and at times it was clear that some of the pieces were not trained enough with the whole group. But those were just minor things my eye cached. Over all I enjoyed the show. It’s great that MyoPro has stepped up and given something new to Finnish cosplay scene. And it was a good cosplay! I’m somehow used to group performances with moderate costumes, but in the case of MyuPro I was happily surprised. The costumes were consistent trough the group. Star sticker approval for the props, the body paint and the wigs! Especially Hitsugaya’s wig caught my attention. It was also clear that the characters were casted with thought, keeping in mind the proportions of the group members. I'm looking forward of their other shows in future conventions. Water bottles were wih us all the time. And apparently with everyone else too, because there were zero heat strokes at the con.

At one we headed to Fandub lecture, hosted by Finnish fandub group MämmiKunniaan. They have made regular fandubs and comical ones from Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist and many others. They talked about the constructions of the clips, which programs they are using and showed videos from requested by the audience. The audience was also free to ask questions from anything related to the production. People asked about how they could join the group at least twice. I don’t know was it only me, but I saw the question irrelevant and pushy.

After the Fandub lecture we had spare time, which we used beneficially by eating. We had bought some picnic food the previous day and stuffed them into our hotel room’s fridge. We just needed to pick them up, take a blanket with us and have a meal at the Sorsapuisto, park just next to the convention center. We were going to eat dinner at restaurant after six, when the con was closing for the day. Actually our timetable for feeding times proved to be the greatest idea ever. Nobody suffered from hunger and there were no tension about going to the store or finding a place to eat. In the future we shall continue on this road and plan the meals for conventions accurately.

At four we headed to lecture “Tales, legends and historical characters in anime and manga”. It was almost two hours long and I personally found it little dry at some points. I think it was in the beginning, when the lecturer went trough the different eposes. Of course it was essential part, but still too lengthy. Maybe it would have worked if the examples were mixed in the lecture thorough. What I found rather irritating was the attitude towards the corrections from the audience. They were passed by without polite thank you or any comment at all. Maybe this was because the lecturer was ill? Still the lecture gave new information. The examples varied from series from eighties to the newest one. One of them brought up nice memories from childhood and it was Starzinger. I never have paid that much attention to the design and the story line of the series. Well, I haven’t watched it in ages! But yes, now I see the influence from Journey to the West.

In the evening we went to after party. I drank few beers. Yoki and Karan enjoyed alcohol free refreshments, because they are wise. We arrived little late and didn’t see the bands booked for the party, but we did see the epic match Heroquest style! After the battle we sticked to table socker and had our own, tense tournament. We played three rounds, so that everyone would play two rounds with a partner and one alone. I can't remember who won. It must be either Yoki or Karan. I surely would remember if it was me.

The next day started as the previous. Only difference was that Karan sat back and monitored our preparations. She had decided to not to wear her costume, which by the way was Izumo no Takeru from Opera Susanoh Sword of the Devil, but to take pictures. I so understand. She was so sweet, always ready to grab my camera when I had to pose or to hold my hat , when I was off to take pictures. Thank you again!

First we went to see the By-product of anime interest. I knew something about everything the lecturer brought up, but it was nice to have more information from them. The Vocaloid were the most alien for me. The lecturer stated in the beginning that he is going to handle the Vocaloid in the end and as long as he has time, because it is his own interest in them. It was well planned, because in our case, we didn’t find it that relevant. But in all, I liked the lecture. The lecturer had contact with the audience and the image material was good. For some sections I leave a question mark. I didn’t really see them as by-products, but as their own individual phenomenons.

At two we went to see the Cosplay group contest. I was surprised that there were still at least a handful of groups which dropped out from the competition. The performances were really music influenced, which is not bad. There were no embarrassing fan service or yaoi scenes, which made me and surely many others really happy. My favorites were the winner Koorizatou, even if I’m not familiar with Ragrarok Online and the group with four members, two “identical” tulle-skirt girls. The girls ecpecially were awesome. I got chills in a positive way on their “singing” parts. Talking about accuracy and performing. I think they were left without any special attention, because the series were not well known. They should really be acknowledged.

After the competition we went to buy some snacks and chilled in the park until the closing ceremony. As usual the winners of the competitions were announced. We didn’t see the individual contest and when the winner was named I felt a bit sorry. It was Tira from Soul Calibur! One of my favorite characters from the game series! Noooo… But I checked the video from the competition from Youtube and she looked great and the performance was character loyal. Me likey. In all the closing ceremony was warm and nice way to end the convention. I specially like the moment when the people behind the event takes the stage. From my opinion they made Tracon a great and enjoyable convention and I hope we can attend it the next autumn.


The only thing left was the journey home. We changed our clothes at the convention site and headed to our car. Our luggage was already there, because we had checked out from the hotel in the morning. I was first to drive and you know what happened? The narrow passage got us again! The second scratch was accomplished. Again we drove in turns with Karan. It went well, even if we all were pretty tired.

In the end everything went well. The only casualties were the scratches on the car. I and Karan had sore leg muscles, because we didn’t have the most comfortable shoes. Mine were too a size too small and Karan’s… Well, I don’t even know how they stayed on her feet! Later this summer we are going to have a photoshoots for pictures and for a video starring Joxter and Muddler.
